BUILDING AND LANDSCAPE

The exhibition building

When our exhibition building opened in 2014, Denmark gained a new cultural-historical landmark. The building was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and is an architectural destination which attracts attention from all over the world. With its staggered levels, the building is inspired by archaeological excavations which gradually uncover the layers of history. From the 750 m² foyer, you are naturally led through the museum’s stories – up to the ethnographic exhibitions, into the special exhibition room or down the Stairway of Evolution to Denmark’s distant past, where a ceiling height of 12 metres provides space for presentations of completely new dimensions.

The roof with the fantastic view

When you have experienced the stories inside the building, there is another experience above: from the roof of the museum, which is open to everyone, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Aarhus Bay and the landscape to the south of the city. The roof is an ideal place for picnics in the summer, sledging in the winter or just a break in the open air whatever the season.

Moesgaard’s natural and cultural landscape

Around Moesgaard you will find everything from a manor house park and tall forest to open fields and beaches – a unique landscape of 100 hectares, which tells the story of people's lives around Aarhus Bay over thousands of years.

The area offers experiences for everyone – from a short stroll in the nearby manor house landscape to a longer walk along the beautiful Prehistoric Trail. Or how about a bike ride on the newly-established cycle route?

Sustainability and biodiversity

Moesgaard wants to manage and care for our landscape based on the principle of minimal intervention to protect both nature and culture, as well as to encourage biodiversity. A nature report is prepared each year, in which key figures for biodiversity are estimated, in order to provide optimal natural conditions for ecosystems, fungi, insects, animals and plants, allowing large parts of the landscape to grow wild, with felled trees left lying in the forests.

In a collaboration with Aarhus Municipality, Moesgaard runs a group for more natural maintenance of the areas.
